  • About 75% of breast cancers are found in women over age 50. 
  • At least 80% of women diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history of breast cancer.
  • About 70% of women diagnosed with breast cancer have no known risk factors except their age. 
  • Men diagnosed with breast cancer represent less than one percent of all breast cancer cases. 
  • About 23% of breast cancer cases occur in women under age 50, 46% occur in women aged 50-69, and 32% in women aged 70 and over. 
  • In 2001, about 19,500 Canadian women were diagnosed with breast cancer and about 5,500 died from it. It is estimated that 20,500 Canadian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2002.
  • In 2002, about 7,800 women in Ontario will be diagnosed with breast cancer and about 2,000 will die from it.
  • On average, 375 Canadian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer every week. 
  • One in 9 women will develop breast cancer over their lifetime and one in 26 are expected to die from it.
  • In 1995, 20% of all new cancers in women living in Leeds, Grenville and Lanark were breast cancer. 
  • As in the rest of Ontario, the number of women diagnosed with breast cancer in Leeds, Grenville and Lanark counties has increased slowly and steadily over time. In 1981, there were only 60 new cases of breast cancer in Leeds, Grenville and Lanark and in 1995 there were more than 100. 
  • In 1996, breast cancer was one of the leading causes of death for women in Leeds, Grenville and Lanark, accounting for about 7% of all deaths among women in the region.
