Use of car seats
Back to Keeping Kids Safe

The Ministry of Transportation has information, which can help you to choose and use the correct type of car seat. Visit Smart Love at MTO. Buy your car seat in Canada. If you buy from the USA, your car seat will not meet Canadian regulations and your child’s safety could be at risk. You will not be notified of any recalls/public notices and you could be charged under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act. For more information, read the following from Transport Canada - Cross Border Shopping.

If you already have a car seat and are wondering if the car seat has had a recall or public notice, Transport Canada keeps track of this information. When using this chart, you need to know the manufacturer of your car seat, when it was made and the model name and number.

All new car seats come with straps to use the universal attachment system. This can be used instead of a seat belt if your car has the proper anchor points. All cars made after September 2002 have the anchor points. Do not use both the UAS and the seat belt. Always read the instruction manual for your vehicle to see when you can use the UAS. Some car manufacturers do not allow the UAS to be used in the middle of the back seat.
