Bedroom
  • Crib meets safety standards
  • No bumper pads or toys in the crib that can be used to climb
  • Mobile out of reach
  • Always keep one hand on child while on change table
  • Diaper pail and changing supplies out of reach
  • Window blind cords secured out of reach
  • Locks on bedroom doors can be opened from outside
  • Guardrails on all upper bunks (No child under six years on upper bunks)


Bathroom
  • Child always supervised while in the bathroom and bathtub
  • Always run cold water before hot and always turn cold water off last
  • Bath water temperature always checked with elbow before putting child in
  • Expired medicines returned to the pharmacy
  • Slip free surface in tub
  • Bathroom door kept closed to keep children out
  • Locked bathroom door can be opened from outside

Stored out of reach:

  • medicines
  • electrical appliances
  • sharp objects
  • personal care products
  • garbage


Indoor Play Areas
Toy cautions:
  • no small pieces that can cause choking
  • no sharp corners or edges
  • no joints that can pinch finders
  • painted with non-toxic paint
  • no broken toys
  • Toys put away to avoid dangers on the floor
  • Remove batteries from toys in storage
  • Toys are age appropriate


  • Kitchen
    • Child always supervised while in kitchen
    • Safety latches on cabinets and drawers
    • High chair has wide base and harness
    • Pot handles turned inward on the stove
    • Cooking pots have proper fitting lids
    • Oven mitts are kept close to cooking area
    • No placemats or tablecloths
    • Food treats and attractive items stored away from the stove
    • Working fire extinguisher available

    • cleaners and chemicals
    • vitamins and medicine
    • knives and sharp utensils
    • matches
    • plastic bags and plastic wrap
    • glass and breakables
    • small appliances

    General Living Areas
    • Sharp edges on furniture padded
    • Bookshelves and tall furniture fastened to wall
    • Window blind cords secured out of reach
    • Small rugs or runners tacked down or slip free
    • Working smoke detectors on each floor (Check batteries)
    • Working carbon monoxide detectors (Check batteries)
    • Make a fire escape plan and practice it
    • TV and electrical equipment stored securely
    • Safety rails or screens on fireplaces and woodstoves
    • Chimney inspected and cleaned every year
    • Guns stored unloaded in locked cases with ammunition stored separately

    Stored out of reach:

    • heavy or breakable objects
    • plants
    • ashtrays/cigarette butts/cigarettes
    • coins
    • balloons
    • wire clothes hangers
    • purses


    Stairs and Railings
    • Safety gates at the top and bottom of all stairways (top gate must be approved for use on stairs)
    • No loose carpeting, toys or uneven steps
    • Stairs well lit
    • Protective walls and railings on stairs, porches and balconies




    Electrical Outlets and Fixtures

    Unused outlets covered with safety plugs on:

    • wall outlets
    • extension cords
    • power bars
    • Switches and outlets have cover plates
    • Electrical cords out of reach but never under rugs or stapled to baseboards
    • Extension cords kept to a minimum
    • All sockets in light fixtures have bulbs in place


    Windows
    • Windows above the first floor secured
    • Chains and cords on blinds and curtains out of reach
    • Chains at the base of vertical blinds removed





    Outdoor Areas of the Home
    • Always supervise children in water or near water (pools, streams, puddles, etc.)
    • Children always supervised while outdoors
    • Gardening tools and chemicals locked in shed or garage
    • Home play structures inspected regularly and promptly fixed
    • Keep outdoor play areas separate form lane ways and street traffic
    • Propane canisters are stored outside in a secure and well-ventilated area
    • Outdoor pool has a fence with a self-locking/self-latching gate
