Cancer - Chronic Disease Prevention
Data definitions, limitations & uses Data Sources

Cancer, in its many forms was the second leading cause of death in Leeds, Grenville and Lanark (LGL) in 1996. It accounted for about 30% of all female deaths, and 26% of all male deaths (see figure 1). In addition, cancers were the leading cause of potential years of life lost in 1996. They accounted for over 3000 potential years of life lost (pyll) in this year. In this report, data are presented on the rates of new cancers, deaths caused by cancers and hospitalizations that result from cancer. Well over half of all new cancers among each sex are accounted for by just three cancer sites: prostate, lung, and colorectal in men, breast, lung, and colorectal in women. In 1996, lung cancer alone accounted for 25% of all cancer deaths in LGL. Between 1981 and 1990 the crude mortality rate from all cancers in LGL had been constant in both men and women (see figure 2). However, since 1990 the cancer mortality rates for both men and women have been higher on average. This trend holds even when we control for the impact of an aging population.  The age-standardized mortality rate for all cancers between 1994-1996 is almost 7% higher than it was between 1989-1991 (see figure 3). This rise in local mortality rates has resulted in rates that are higher than in all of Ontario (see figure 4).   In addition to higher mortality rates, LGL has higher cancer incidence rates than all of Ontario (see figure 5). Similar to mortality rates, cancer incidence rates have also increased during the past fifteen years in LGL. The age-standardized incidence rate for all cancers in LGL was 20% higher in 1992-1995 than compared to 1982-1986 (see figure 6).
