  • In 2001, children (up to age 19) made up 25.8% of the population in LGL. The proportion of children in Lanark, at 26.7 % was somewhat higher than in Leeds and Grenville at 25.1%.
  • The infant mortality rate for the period 1997-1999 was 6.3 per 1000 live births, compared to 5.2 for Ontario1. The LGL rate is somewhat lower than the average rate for the earlier five year period, 1993 to 1997, of 6.7%2.
  • The mortality rate for the age group 1-19 years for the years 1997 to 1999 was 0.23 per 1000 population; the comparable figure for Ontario is 0.171.
  • In the years 1993-1997, the leading cause of death among children was injuries and poisonings accounting for over 60% of all deaths to children. 74% of the injury related deaths were in the 15-19 age group2.
  • The second leading cause in these years was neoplasms, accounting for 11% of deaths in the 1-19 age group1. From 1993 - 1997, mortality rates for children age 5-9 and 10-14 in LGL were similar to regional and provincial rates. However mortality rates in the 1-4 and 15-19 age groups were considerably higher2.
