Harm Reduction
- Needle Exchange Program (NEP)

Program Information for Health Care Professionals

All Services are FREE & CONFIDENTIAL

The NEP is a service of the Health Unit and the community for local injection drug users (IDUs). It provides sites where new supplies (needles, sharps containers, and other safer injection equipment) can be obtained and used needles are returned. Information is also available about other community services.

Drug Related Health Warnings

Benefits of the Needle Exchange Program

To the IDU:

  • Promotes the single use of injection drug use equipment and therefore, less chance of contracting a blood borne infection like HIV, hepatitis B or hepatitis C.

  • Positive contact with the community and a potential source of help or referral to other community services.

To the community:

  • Safe disposal of used needles.

  • Reduced incidents of blood borne infections in the community.

What happens at the exchange sites?

  • The person wishing to make an exchange brings used needles to an exchange site.

  • A staff member at the site will ask that used needles be placed in a puncture resistant container.

  • The person making the exchange will receive new needles and other supplies needed to inject and dispose of needles safely.

  • No personal identifying information is recorded. To help evaluate the program, data is kept on the number of needles and other supplies given out and sharps containers returned.

Who can exchange needles at the NEP site?

Anyone who uses needles to inject street drugs.

Safer Injecting Means

Never Share

  • Needles, water, spoons, filters or other injection drug use equipment.
Keep It Clean

  • Before injecting, wash your hands and clean the injection site with an alcohol swab.
Safe Disposal
  • DO NOT recap your needle. Place used needles into a sharps container and return it to a needle exchange site.
Rotate Injection Sites
  • To reduce damage to veins or tissues. Safer Injecting information is available at the needle exchange sites.
