Harm Reduction - Safer Inhalation Program
- Safer Crack Smoking
The Safer Inhalation Program began at the Health Unit in the Fall of 2014 and is part of the Smart Works program at the Health Unit. This program provides equipment to clients who use inhaled drugs, such as crack cocaine or crystal meth. Clients accessing this program may also be using the Smart Gear program for injection drugs as well.
Research shows that people who smoke crack cocaine have an increased risk of contracting HIV, Hepatitis C and other bacterial infections and viruses. (Best Practice Recommendations, 2013). Because of these health implications, we provide our clients with equipment and also education, counselling and referrals. The services offered to clients accessing the Safer Inhalation Program are similar to those using the Smart Gear Program.
