This plan provides guidelines for the management of influenza pandemic in Leeds, Grenville and Lanark. It is intended to complement both the existing Health Unit Emergency Response Plan (Revised 2006) as well as the existing Municipal Emergency Response Plans.

Who are we?

We are a team of public health nurses working in the Department of Clinical Services and public health inspectors working in the Department of Health Protection.

We are members of local, regional, provincial and national organizations in infection control.

Background

Infectious diseases are an important cause of sickness and death in the community. Infectious diseases represent constant new challenges to public health as new organisms emerge as causes of disease. Today, we as professionals are more knowledgeable about how infections are spread and can be prevented.

The team works with community partners in infection control such as long-term care facilities, hospitals, day cares, schools and the public.

The control of infectious diseases programming is the responsibility of the Department of Clinical Services and Department of Health Protection.

The goals of these programs are:

  • To reduce the incidence of infectious diseases of public health importance
  • To provide or respond to large scale epidemics and outbreaks of infectious disease
  • To maintain an influenza pandemic plan for the tri-county
  • To plan for the management of West Nile virus in humans
  • To reduce the incidence of tuberculosis in Leeds, Grenville and Lanark

Some of our primary responsibilities include:

  • Providing education programs for health care professionals
  • Responding to outbreaks in the community and institutions
  • Managing cases and contacts of infectious diseases
  • Providing follow-up for latent and infectious Tuberculosis
  • Raising awareness about
    • Tuberculosis
    • Influenza
    • Pandemic Influenza
    • Bioterrorism Agents
    • MRSA,VRE
    • Infection Control

The Department of Clinical Services has authority under the Health Protection and Promotion Act to deal with infectious diseases, including Tuberculosis.
