All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) first appeared in Canada in the 1970s. These multipurpose recreational vehicles have increased in popularity in Ontario with retail sales between 1997 and 2001 more than tripling (Ontario Trauma Registry Analytic Bulletin-December 2003). This rapid growth of ATV use has led to an increase in injuries (Smartrisk 2004).
In Leeds Grenville and Lanark counties, there were a total of 280 reported ambulatory ATV related injuries between 2002 and 2006 (Ministry of Health and Long-term Care Provincial Health Planning Database). Injuries can commonly be attributed to speed, inexperience, improper apparel, non-helmet use and alcohol.

All parents want their children to be safe from harm.
One risk that many are unaware of involves All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) and children. The "I Didn't Know" campaign is designed to educate parents about the risk of severe injury or death to children who drive or ride ATVs.
Many children are injured and killed while riding as a passenger or operating an ATV.
