Food poisoning, all causes

The following specified Reportable Disease, (Ontario Regulation 559/91 and amendments under the Health Protection and Promotion Act, 1990) is to be reported to the Local Medical Office of Health.
Note: Diseases marked and all respiratory infection outbreaks in institutions should be reported immediately to the Medical Officer of Health by telephone. Other diseases are to be reported the next working day.

Survillance Case Definition: Food Poisoning, all causes

Confirmed case: Clinically compatible signs and symptoms, known to be linked to food consumption, with:

A} isolation of a microbial toxin, and or pathogenic organism in vomitus, feces, or a suspected food item. or
B} an epidemiologic link to two or more lab confirmed cases of food poisoning

NOTE: Exclusionary Criteria for Meeting the Case Definition for Food Poisoning

Food poisoning due to Clostridium botulinum, Campylobacter infections, Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella infections, Shigella infections, verotoxin-producing E.Coli or Yersinia infections should be reported under these organisms. All others should be reported as food poisoning episodes.
