The following specified Reportable Disease, (Ontario Regulation 559/91 and
amendments under the
Health Protection and Promotion Act, 1990) is to be reported to
the Local Medical Office of Health.
Note: Diseases marked
and all respiratory infection outbreaks in institutions should be
reported
immediately to the Medical Officer of Health by telephone. Other diseases are to
be reported
the next working day.

Surveillance Case Definition: Hantavirus pulmonary
syndrome
Confirmed Case: Clinically compatible signs and symptoms with:
a) detection of hantavirus-specific IgM or 4 fold or
greater increase in
hantavirus - specific IgG antibody titres; or
b) detection of hantavirus-specific ribonucleic acid sequence by
polymerase chain reaction in an appropriate clinical specimen
or
c) detection of hantavirus antigen by immunohistochemistry
Note:
Because of the difficulty in diagnosing HPS a section on appropriate
specimen collection and submission is included here:
For acute cases: 10 ml of clotted blood for serology
If available or when required: -formalin fixed tissues at ambient
temperature for immunohistochemistry. – frozen tissues (lung biopsy) for
PCR
For autopsy specimen:
- all blood and sera samples collected
- paraffin embedded blocks and formalin fixed tissues
for immunohistochemistry
- frozen tissues for PCR |
