The following specified Reportable Disease, (Ontario Regulation 559/91 and
amendments under the
Health Protection and Promotion Act, 1990) is to be reported to
the Local Medical Office of Health.
Note: Diseases marked
and all respiratory infection outbreaks in institutions should be
reported
immediately to the Medical Officer of Health by telephone. Other diseases are to
be reported
the next working day.

Surveillance Case Definition: Meningitis, acute –
bacterial, viral and other causes
Confirmed Case - Clinically compatible signs and symptoms including
evidence of CNS infection with:
(a)isolation of an organism or detection of its antigen from a relevant
site or
(b)serologic confirmation of infection with an organism known to cause
meningitis or encephalitis or
(c)without laboratory confirmation of a causative organism, but with
suggestive clinical and laboratory findings.
NOTE: Meningitis due to Haemophilus influenzae type b, Neisseria
meningitides, Streptococcus pneumoniae or Listeria monocytogenes should
be reported under the corresponding diseases. |
