How Healthy is Your Workplace?
By Danielle Shewfelt, Public Health Nurse

Workplace Wellness is important to all employees as well as their employers. The relationship between employee and employer works both ways. Employers benefit from having healthy employees and a healthy workplace. Employees benefit from having employers who provide a supportive healthy workplace.

The Health Unit has a vast array of health information and resources available to the public. Some of the topics we cover are: Physical Activity, Healthy Eating/Healthy Weights, Cancer Prevention, Tobacco Education, Dental Health, Injury & Substance Abuse Prevention, Immunization, Sexual Health, Pregnancy, Healthy Babies/Healthy Children, Preschool Speech & Language, Food Safety, Water Safety and Rabies.

Using these resources and the varied expertise of our staff, we are in the process of developing our own new Workplace Wellness Program. This program will be available to serve as an example for other workplaces as a model for their own workplace wellness programs. Other workplaces will be able to use these resources and modify them to meet their own individual needs, rather than "re-inventing the wheel". Meanwhile we continue to publish Health Briefs, and mail it out three times a year. Health Briefs is our FREE Workplace Newsletter, full of health information for workers. If you would like your workplace to receive the newsletter contact us. You may also wish to view back issues of Health Briefs on our website @ under "WORKPLACE". Our Workplace page will be updated at the end of October to assist with your workplace wellness initiatives. www.healthunit.org
