Healthy Babies Healthy Children Public Health Nurses Continue To Provide Support And Education

In the year 2003, public health nurses contacted 1416 families when they came home with their newborn. Eighty-Five percent of these families had this contact within 48 hours of their discharge from the hospital and 59% of these families accepted the Public Health Nurse’s offer of a home visit. The Healthy Babies Healthy Children program also offers a home visiting program which is an early intervention initiative targeted to families identified as being at high risk for problems that may compromise their child’s healthy development. Public Health Nurses and Family Home Visitors made ongoing home visits to 131 families. Parents of 17 month old toddlers receive a mail out. It includes the Nipissing District Developmental Screen and a board book gift for their toddler as well as encouragement to take their child to their health care practitioner for an 18 month assessment.
