Food Safety Certification Program Helps Foodhandlers Get Trained
The Health Unit provides services related to the assurance of safe foods for human consumption. In 1999, the Health Unit focused on education of food handlers.

A provincially recognized Certification Course, developed by Public Health Inspectors, gave food industry employees an opportunity to improve their knowledge of food safety issues and standards.

The aim of this program was to have at least one certified food handler in each food service premise. Over the year, 278 food handlers received their Certificate in Food Safety.

The certified food handler then leads his or her co-workers through example and knowledge of all food safety aspects, therefore providing a safer quality product for their customers.
