Every New Mother
Contacted By Health Unit
The Healthy Babies/Healthy
Children Program is intended to give our
children the best start possible. New program
components were added in 1999.
The services to pregnant women were expanded.
As of October 1, 1999, all new mothers receive
a phone call by a Public Health Nurse within
48 hours of hospital discharge. All mothers
are eligible for a follow-up home visit by a
Public Health Nurse to support the transition
to parenthood. This program also provides home
visits by trained supportive lay home
visitors.
In June, the Healthy Babies Healthy Children
Coalition conducted a community wide
consultation to identify ways to support
children six weeks to six years, and their
families. A report of the tri-counties'
recommendations was sent to the Ministry of
Health.
