Safe Communities SCIP Program Helps Local Small Businesses Get a Sizeable Refund from WSIB
The Safe Communities Coalitions in Brockville and Smiths Falls had reason to celebrate in October. Both communities organized a Safe Communities Incentive Program (SCIP) in partnership with the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB).

Throughout 1999, the number of workplace incidents was tracked. The group of recruited firms lowered their WSIB claims costs, making them eligible for a cash rebate.

In Smiths Falls, 22 firms shared over $26,000 in rebates. Cheques w

ere presented by Smiths Falls Mayor Dennis Staples and Doug Easson, WSIB manager of the SCIP program. In Brockville, 75 firms shared over $97,000 in rebates.

A strong partner in both area’s Safe Communities initiatives, the Health Unit also participated in the SCIP program. The Health Unit’s Director of Corporate Services attended the health and safety training. Greater health and safety awareness both within the Health Unit and within the community helped to promote safer work environments.
