Reports & Publications - Annual Report 2000

Helping Build Stronger Babies and Families

The new millennium introduced a revised Health Unit Prenatal Education Program to the residents of Leeds, Grenville and Lanark. Health promotion is the common thread throughout the seven classes as parents-to-be are given information that can help them make informed decisions about the way they live before and after their baby is born. Through education, parents-to-be are given the information they need to help them have a healthy pregnancy, a healthy birth experience and a healthy baby and family. The new class content includes updated information, new videos and teaching props, a colourful and informative slide presentation and a variety of interesting books and handouts to be brought home. The new classes were piloted in Almonte and Smiths Falls in early 2000 and are now ongoing in both of these communities as well as Brockville, Perth, Prescott, Gananoque, Carleton Place and Kemptville. Feedback from people who attended the classes was very positive. The program will continue to be evaluated and revised to ensure area residents are being offered the most updated prenatal education. Our Healthy Babies Healthy Children Program continued to provide pre and postnatal services to families in the year 2000. Public Health Nurses contacted 1,334 families by telephone within 48 hours of discharge home with their new baby and did 791 postpartum visits to the new parents. Supportive Home Visitors and Public Health Nurses made 4,087 visits to families to provide ongoing support for parenting and healthy child growth and development.
