Helping Increase Physical Activity
The Health Unit and ParticipACTION invited tri-county residents to participate in the SUMMER ACTIVE CHALLENGE 2000. From May 12 to June 23, adults across Ontario were encouraged to try the 30x4x2 challenge which required participants to be active for 30 minutes, four days a week for 2 weeks. The contest was free and there were over 240 prizes to be won. Canada's Physical Activity Guidelines to healthy active living recommend that adults accumulate 60 minutes of light physical activity each day. As the individuals progress to more moderate activity they can reduce to 30 minutes, four days each week. This challenge encouraged inactive individuals to take that first step towards fitting 30x4x2 into their own lifestyles. Residents challenged friends, neighbours and colleagues to get active and used this friendly competition to be healthier.
