Tobacco Kills: This
is what we are doing about it
In Ontario 15,000 lives are lost each year due to tobacco products. In response to
this, the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit runs a variety of
programs and participates in partnership that enhance our ability to help reduce the
use of and exposure to second hand smoke. As part of our comprehensive tobacco
strategy we work with schools and school boards, workplaces, health and social
services agencies, and the public at large. We support or participate in teen based
tobacco prevention strategies including the Tobacco Vortal project, presentations to
grade 7&8 in the Healthy Choices program, do brief cessation counselling and
provide information to smokers trying to quit smoking, work with municipalities and
workplaces to implement smoke free policies, implement the Quit Smoking Contest in
our communities, provide second-hand smoke and cessation information in our prenatal
classes, sexual health clinics as well as our various partnerships and advocacy
roles. We see a tobacco-free Leeds Grenville and Lanark in which all people are able
to achieve their optimal level of health by eliminating the use of and exposure to
tobacco products.
