Healthy Nutrition In Schools
Back to 2004 Annual Report

Submitted by Heather Deegan, MSc, RD, Public Health Nutritionist

The Health Unit has been working with both the Upper Canada District School Board and the Catholic School Board of Eastern Ontario to create healthy nutrition environments in the school setting.

In September 2004, the Board of Health passed a motion endorsing the document Call to Action: Creating a Healthy School Nutrition Environment, which was developed by the Ontario Society of Nutrition Professionals in Public Health. The Call to Action challenges the provincial government, boards of education, school communities and public health units to acknowledge and act on their roles in establishing a supportive nutrition environment in schools.

A school environment that supports healthy food and beverage choices provides students with the skills, social support and environmental reinforcements to adopt healthy eating patterns. It also enables children to practice the healthy eating messages they receive through the formal curriculum. The endorsement of the Call to Action on behalf of the Board of Health signifies its recognition of the health and educational benefits of making healthy eating a priority in every school.
