Reports & Publications - Annual Report 2006

West Nile Virus

In 2006, there were 41 human cases of West Nile Virus in Ontario, resulting in 2 deaths. In Leeds, Grenville and Lanark, although we have the right conditions, we did not find the virus in the mosquito population. This situation can change quickly, so the health unit continues to monitor for signs of the disease.

We encourage people to continue maintaining their properties to reduce standing water where mosquitoes breed. During outdoor activities in the spring and summer we also encourage the use of personal protection including covering up, wearing light-coloured clothing and the use of insect repellents containing DEET.
