This fall, the Grocery Store Task Force of the Tri-Health Team carried out a special promotional campaign at two local grocery stores in Perth and Carleton Place. Part of the mandate of the Tri-Health Team is to encourage healthy eating habits in Tri-County residents. Our fall campaign was a unique and interactive way of promoting healthy eating.
During two three-hour sessions, a committee member of the Tri-Health Grocery Store Task Force set up a display in area grocery stores. Astrid Strader of the Oasis Institute for Healthy Living, with the assistance of a pumpkin and a sweet pee (Food & Nutrition Management Students from Kemptville College in disguise), provided samples of homemade mushroom pate and healthy eating information to over 300 people. The campaign was well received by shoppers. Hundreds of pamphlets and Tri-Health recipe cards were distributed and there were colouring sheets available for children as well as Tri-Health Frisbees and magnets to promote the coalition. The activity was a fun and innovative way to help Tri-county residents make healthier food choices.
* In January 2001, the Grocery Store Task Force will be distributing its second round of recipe tear-off sheets and new posters to grocery stores. The focus of the new material is on calcium and legumes. Keep your eye out in your local store for creative recipes and current nutrition information!
