Monthly Board Report - January 2001

Health Hazard Alert

submitted by Henry Garcia, Director of Health Protection Department

On November 23, 2000, the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care released a voluntary recall of 14-oz cans of beans -Original Beans in Tomato Sauce. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency in cooperation with Heinz Canada issued this voluntary recall.

The reason for the recall was that after analysis was conducted it was revealed that some cans might not have been processed in a manner to prevent the presence of Clostridium botulinum. Botulism is a serious life-threatening illness that can be caused by the ingestion of a toxin produced by this organism.
