"RABIES” Through Education

The Ministry of Health in conjunction with the Ontario Physical and Health Education Association have developed a comprehensive “Rabies Education Package” which has been delivered to all school Principals.

Rabies is a deadly disease that can kill. It also is a disease that through education can be prevented. In the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark area 27 cases of raccoon rabies, and three cases of bat rabies have been confirmed since January, 2000. The Ministry of Natural Resources – Rabies Research Unit has been doing extensive work in our area to control Raccoon Rabies through their bait program, and the “trap, vaccinate and release” program. Education must also play a role in the control of rabies so that human exposure (to rabies) does not happen. Children are at a particularly high risk because of their attraction to animals.

The education package was developed to work into the core curriculum and can be integrated within topics you are currently covering. It has been designed for Grades 1-6.

Refrigerator magnets are available from the Health Unit to be provided to each student in your class, should you choose to use the program.

The Public Health Inspectors remain willing to come into your school and deliver a rabies education program. If you prefer to have an Inspector make a rabies presentation in your class, please contact the Health Protection Department at the Health Unit in Brockville at 613-345-5685 or Smiths Falls at 613-283-2740.
