Immunization - Your Best Protection

Vaccines (needles or baby shots) are the best way to protect against some very serious infections. Vaccination against diptheria, tetanus, polio and pertussis as well as measles, mumps and rubella is recommended for use in infants and children younger that 7 years. These vaccinations are required by law for all children attending school in Ontario (unless exempted).

You child should receive two immunizations between 4 - 6 years of age. These are: pertussis, tetanus, diptheria and polio (in one needle) and measles, mumps and rubella (in one needle). A booster needle against tetanus, diptheria and polio is given around the 15th birthday.

Your Record of Protection
After your child receives any immunization, ensure that the doctor updates the yellow immunization card. This is your record of your child's immunization.

Please notify the Immunization Department of the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit at 1-800-660-5853 or 613-345-5685 Ext. 2267 when your child receives any immunizations.

Hepatitis B Update
The local health unit will again be immunizing the grade 7 students for hepatitis B. This year the Ministry of Health has approved a two dose schedule of hepatitis B vaccine.

The regimen consists of 2 doses of Recomibivax HB vaccine to be given according to the following schedule:

  • First injection: Fall 2000
  • Second injection: Spring 2001 (4-6 months from 1st injections)

Consents will be sent home with your child though the school.

Expanded Influenza Campaign
This year the Ministry of Health has expanded its annual influenza vaccination program. In the past only targeted groups were offered vaccine free of charge.
This is now open to anyone requesting the vaccine.
