School - Food and Beverage Policy (PPM 150)

This policy applies to food and beverages sold in schools. It will apply to foods and beverages sold in all venues on school property such as cafeterias, vending machines and tuck shops; through all programs, including catered lunch programs; and at all events on school property, including bake sales and sporting events. Schools will be required to implement this policy by the start of the 2011-12 school year.

The Ministry of Education also has online learning modules to help in the successful implementation of the Food and Beverage Policy (Policy/Program Memorandum No. 150). These modules are intended for School board staff, principals and vice-principals, and those involved in the sale of food and beverages in schools (e.g., food service providers, public health professionals, teachers, parents, students).

The Ministry of Education also has School Food & Beverage Policy Online & Print Resources along with a Nutrition Standards Tool and a Creating Healthy Menus Tool that can be used to determine if prepackaged foods or foods made from scratch meet the nutrition criteria.

The Nutrition Resource Centre also has resources to help with implementation of the policy.

Policy at a Glance: This six-page guide provides an overview of Ontario’s School Food and Beverage Policy. The intended audiences are parents and students in intermediate and secondary levels.

Bake It Up!: This document includes over 20 recipes for healthier baked goods that comply with the Ministry of Education’s School Food and Beverage Policy. It can be used by anyone making baked goods to be sold in schools.
