OPHEA - Healthy Growth and Development Modules

Puberty Education (Grade 5 & 6) - Puberty is a time of changing, students learn about body changes and basic reproduction.

Racing Against Drugs (Grade 4 & 5) - Racing Against Drugs is a community-based drug/alcohol awareness and injury prevention program for students. It was originally developed in 1994 through a partnership of the London RCMP, the Ford Motor Company and the former London Board of Education. This year it will be held in Smiths Falls on May 30th, 31st and June 1st.  Registration forms were sent out to all schools in February. Participation will be based on who applies first.

Hepatitis B (Grade 7) - Hepatitis B is a preventable disease.  The Health Unit offers free immunization.

Healthy Sexuality (Grade 7 & 8) - The importance of communication, decision making and abstinence in teenage relationships are discussed.  At Grade 7 damage to the reproductive system caused by Sexually Transmitted Infections are highlighted.  In Grade 8 discussion continues about contraception and consequences of teenage pregnancies.
Sexual Health Teaching Evaluation Executive Summary

Healthy Choices (Resources only) - These resources cover key issues that influence our youth in making healthy choices: Self Esteem, Peer Pressure and Body Image.

Care For Kids (JK/SK) - Healthy sexuality education is the main focus of the CARE FOR KIDS program, it also addresses many subjects included in personal safety programming.  For more info.

Dental Screening - Health Unit Dental staff provide oral assessments in all tri county elementary schools on an annual basis.
All JK/SK students as well as other selected grades are screened. Schools will be contacted by dental staff to arrange a mutually suitable date and time for screening.

TV Turnoff Week - The Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit challenges Elementary School Students and their families to turn off the television for one week this spring, April 4th - 8th 2005, in hopes that everyone will increase their level of physical activity. The rules are simple - no form of television, video games or Internet access for 7 days.

Hand Washing (resources only) - Consistent, thorough handwashing is the cornerstone of preventing the spread of infection. Handwashing will decrease the number of disease-causing germs on the surface of your skin.

Rabies (resources only) - Rabies Free Ontario is an education initiative that provides information on rabies prevention to children in elementary schools. This program has been developed by the Ontario Physical and Health Education Association (OPHEA) in partnership with Ontario Government ministries responsible for rabies education and control. This program was specifically designed with the expectations from the Ontario Curriculum.

Flu Clinics will be offered at a variety of locations around Leeds, Grenville and Lanark.  Some schools will house flu clinics.
