How to Evaluate Internet Sites

Source: Bracken Health Sciences Library, Kingston, Canada
(http://library.queensu.ca/inforef/tutorials/qcat/evalint.htm)

Since anyone can publish essentially anything on the Internet it is important to keep in mind that there are some inherent problems with the information found on the Internet. One of the major problems is in assessing the quality and accuracy of Internet resources. Without a requisite publisher, and/or peer review process, it is often difficult to find out the skills or credentials of the author.

For this reason it is prudent to approach the information on the Internet with caution. It is advisable to ascertain several different sources to support the information acquired from the Internet. Common sense evaluation of characteristics such as accuracy, authority, objectivity, currency, and coverage should be considered.

  • Accuracy: (some questions to consider)

    • Do the authors/webmasters introduce themselves and explain their background and the purpose of the site?
    • Do they provide email addresses to contact them?

  • Authority: (some questions to consider)

    • Is this information trustworthy?
    • What or who is the original source?
    • What is their authority on the subject?
    • Is the site mounted by an individual or a group?

  • Objectivity: (some questions to consider)

    • Will anyone make a profit from your use of the site or the information it contains?
    • What are the goals and objectives of the web page?

  • Currency: (some questions to consider)

    • Is there a statement to tell you when the page was last updated?
    • The Internet changes daily. Sites that are in one place one day may be in another the next or may have completely disappeared. For this reason, more reliable sites are updated frequently.

  • Coverage: (some questions to consider)

    • Also take the time to access the quality of the links on the page.
    • Can you verify the information provided with another source?
    • Is additional software required to view the site?
    • Does it cost money to view the information or is it available free of charge?
