Lungs are for LifeTeachers looking for resources to discuss smoking prevention with their students can go to the Lung Association's grade specific teaching modules in "Lungs are for Life". SMOKING BYLAW RESOURCES

The Ontario Tobacco Strategy (OTS) currently funds resource centers and projects that support the implementation of bylaws on many different levels. The following list provides an overview of the OTS stakeholders' activities relating to smoking bylaws:

  • PTCC can coordinate workshops on bylaw development that include speakers from OCAT and other centres, a legal perspective, as well as speakers on "experiences from the trenches" i.e. municipalities that have passed smoke free by-laws. PTCC can also provide consultation services by linking communities with community consultants who have gone through a bylaw process.

OTS Media Network can do workshops on media relations, and help support local media campaigns in support of bylaws
OTS Media Network provides a wide scope of media related services, all of which can be used to help support smoke-free bylaw campaigns. These services include but are not limited to:

  • NCTH has an on-line compendium of Canadian Law and Tobacco. This resource is designed to provide users with full access to major tobacco control laws in Canada including federal, provincial, and territorial legislation. Users can access major tobacco-specific statutes and regulations in each jurisdiction as well as notable excerpts from non-tobacco laws, such as occupational health legislation. Due to resource limitations, no federal or provincial tobacco tax laws and regulations have been included.

  • OTRU provides an annual monitoring and evaluation report to public health across the province. This report provides important context for work on the bylaw issue by analyzing data from a variety of sources each year. For example, this year the report will have information about awareness of health problems associated with ETS, support for smoking restrictions/bans in public places and workplaces, and exposure in a variety of places. 
  • OTRU investigators are also carrying out research related to bylaws including a study looking at whether smoke-free bylaws reduce smoking and one evaluating different coding schemes to assess the strength of various municipal bylaws. OTRU is also conducting research on the economic impact of smoking bylaws on the hospitality industry.

The Canadian Health Network - Information on Smoking/Tobacco
Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in Canada. An addiction, smoking affects more than 5 million Canadians and causes several health problems including cancer, respiratory and heart disease. This section of the Canadian Health Network offers the best resources available on: tobacco products and their known health effects; effects of secondhand smoke on non-smokers; how to quit smoking; how to prevent youth from starting smoking; and more.
