Carleton Place and District Memorial Hospital
How we established a successful Workplace Health Program in our Hospital
Driven by a growing importance of the formal establishment of a Workplace Health Program, the Carleton Place and District Memorial Hospital (CPDMH) worked in partnership with the Lanark, Leeds and Grenville (LLG) Public Health Unit to develop a structure that would improve both individual health and the overall health of our work environment. A volunteer, staff-driven committee was launched and charged with actively assessing and identifying workplace strengths and health issues while offering environmental support and skill building opportunities for staff. With the help and guidance of the Workplace Health toolkit provided by Health Unit staff, Julie Bolton and Joanne Desormeaux, our passionate group of volunteers, representing all disciplines within our Hospital, began to form a structure and build a unique program for our organization.
The first point of business was to develop a program logo and the committee creativity launched a contest for staff to submit entries to determine a winner. Communication strategies were devised to showcase the winning logo and program information was posted on the Hospital intranet, staff Bulletin Board, as well as distributed via employee pay stubs. At the same time a workplace wellness survey was distributed to all staff. With 111 surveys returned, or a response rate of 85%, the staff provided information about their lifestyles and indicated the types of support that they would find helpful within their workplace to improve their health.
The committee reviewed the survey findings to determine priority actions and activities for change and broke into subgroups to address areas of interest such as healthy eating, physical activity, shift work and stress. To date, changes to the workplace have included the following:
- a healthy snack basket for breaks
- a new healthy beverage cooler
- the establishment of a walking group that includes staff, family members and volunteers
- access to yoga class on site
- the distribution of healthy tips to improve wellness
- the posting of resources for smoking cessation.
With the fall season fast approaching, the CPDMH’s Workplace Health Program will focus on staff learning sessions that address the challenges associated with shift work. In addition, with the decrease in daylight hours and warm temperatures, the walking club is examining the potential of adding a virtual walking club to maintain its membership and hopefully expand the number of participants.
The agreement to create and sustain a healthy and supportive work environment through a formal program and intentionally linked wellness activities fits within the hospital’s strategic priority to become an Employer of Choice. CPDMH recognizes and commends the valuable contribution of the LLG Public Health Unit in the formation of our Workplace Health Program. The expertise of the public health staff and, tools and resources provided by the Health Unit was a significant factor in the in the successful launch of this program and on behalf of our staff we would like to thank you for your help!
