We Did It and You Can Too!
You could have your workplace’s healthy workplace activity or initiative featured on our Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit Workplace website during Canada’s Healthy Workplace Month and over the next year. In October 2010, Greenfield Ethanol Johnstown formed a Wellness Committee whose members represented the various departments of the plant. Our mandate is to raise employee awareness of wellness issues, organize initiatives to encourage employee participation, promote healthy lifestyle choices, influence company policy on wellness related issues, and to share the wellness-related successes of our employees. At the suggestion of the Public Health Nurse from the Leeds, Grenville & Lanark District Health Unit, we began with an employee survey to better understand the needs and wants of our employees and to help our focus our efforts. We have since been very busy with many initiatives and are very proud of where we are and how the employees have responded.
Here are some of the endeavours we have undertaken:
Schedule – we have put together a working schedule of our initiatives to keep track of where we are, resources required, work needed, who is doing what, and approximate timelines. It has been nice to see what we have already accomplished and the many ideas that we plan to tackle at some point.
Wii tournament –The committee purchased a Wii system for the site and employees faced off at lunch hour in the boardroom where other employees were able to watch and cheer. It was been great fun and we believe will we get even more sign-ups for the next tournament.
Exercise bike –the committee purchased a recumbent bike (on eBay!) and put it in the plant. Employees that work shifts and are not able to leave the plant on lunch breaks have the opportunity to fit in some exercise during their day. We will use this as a gauge as to whether we should look into purchasing further equipment.
Fruit baskets – we have begun to offer free seasonal fruit in the 2 lunchrooms weekly. There has been a great positive response to this initiative.
Newsletter –we have begun to send quarterly health news bulletins from the Health Unit to employees’ homes. We would like for our families to also benefit from the useful information.
EAP – we summarized all of the areas that our EAP covers and put it on our TV tickers. We wanted remind employees of the resources that are already at their fingertips.
Healthy options at meetings – we have attempted to minimize the evil cookie platters and have added fruit platters at some of the recent meetings and have encouraged other meeting organizers to do the same.
100 day sit-up challenge – another fun endeavour! We have challenged all employees to perform 1 sit-up on day 1, 2 on day 2, ….100 on day 100. Employees signed-up and have been recording the number completed each day. We have seen some friendly competition and encouragement!
Lunch ‘n Learn – we will be bringing someone in to give a short presentation on nutrition, heart health, or another health topic of interest to our employees while providing healthy snacks.
Annual Flu/H1N1/blood pressure clinics – each fall we are offering these options onsite to our employees.
Blood Pressure cuff – a blood pressure cuff was purchased and is available to all employees. Several employees use the cuff regularly.
