Shift Work Toolkit

This toolkit has been created to help support workplaces in addressing the topic and challenges of Shift Work using a comprehensive health promotion approach. The kit includes information for both employers and employees and highlights background information, resources, and promotional items.   • Executive Summary: Outlines the key elements of Comprehensive Workplace Health Promotion (CWHP). For more detailed information on CWHP, please see The Healthy Workplace Guide.

  • Business Case: Outlines the impact of shift work on the health of workers and ultimately on the bottom line of an organization. It explores options for workplaces who are seeking to address the unique needs of shift workers.

  • Guidelines for Creating Supportive Environments: Provides recommendations to employers who are seeking to create supportive environments for shift workers, by addressing the Shift Schedule Design, the Physical Work Environment, the Social Environment, and Staff Education.

  • Programs and Supportive Environments: Links to resources that discuss the health impact of shift work, and strategies for creating supportive environments to reduce this impact.

  • Steps To Creating A Healthy Workplace Policy: A quick step-by-step reference document outlining the various stages of policy development that can be used to assist workplaces in developing healthy workplace policies.

  • Links for More Information: Provides links to various resources that discuss Shift Work as it relates to Physical Activity, Nutrition, Sleep, Stress and Policy Development.  Also provides links to more information about Comprehensive Workplace Health.

  • Information Cards: Quick reference cards providing employees with the basic facts on how Shift Work impacts health, and tips on how to maintain a healthy lifestyle:

  • Nutrition & Shift Work: A fact sheet providing useful tips on healthy eating for shift workers so they can feel their best both day and night!

  • To Live A Normal & Health Life: Display this poster in high traffic areas to encourage shift workers to take care of their health as it relates to sleep, stress, physical activity, safety, healthy eating and socializing.

  • Powerpoint Presentations provide information about the impact of shift work on employee health, strategies to improve health and wellness, and the benefits to employers who invest in employee health.
