Reading with 2-3 year olds (Talker)

Reading with 2-3 year olds (Talker)

Quick Tips

  • Reading alphabet books with a story is one way to expose children to letters.

Some alphabet books are difficult so ask a Librarian to help you choose some from the Alphabet and Counting Section of your local Library.

  • Once children are familiar with a story, let them tell you what happens. This improves their story-telling skills.

  • There are many ways to read a book.

  • Reading a book all the way through helps children understand the whole story.

Talking about the pictures and following your child's lead increases his/her vocabulary and story telling skills.

Try to ask questions that cannot be answered with just Yes or No.
  • Songs help children hear words broken down into syllables. This helps children to learn to break words down into parts and to sound words out.

  • Knowing the names of many things is one of the skills children need when they later learn to sound out words. Children will learn more words as you read and sing songs together.
