Mary's Story
My name is Mary. I live in Almonte. And I am 17 years old. I started sneaking smokes from my Mom when I was in grade 6. I would share it with my other friends. It made me the cool
girl and I always had lots of friends. Well it didn't take long, and I actually craved and wanted a cigarette several times a day. I was up to 1 package every couple of days. Well I got this part time job that was a few evening and all day Saturday and Sunday. The job was in Kanata. They have this new smoking bylaw there. This smoking was affecting my job. I would watch the clock just to have a break so I could go outside and smoke. It was a small place so we each had to take breaks at different times. There I was standing in the cold by myself needing to smoke. I decided this was stupid. Why did such a little thing like a cigarette trap me? I decided to quit. I tried to just stop several times. I started to talk to people and found some help. There is this Smokers Help line. I could call it anytime I felt a craving, or I had a little slip. I have been tobacco free now for 4 months. It still is hard to resist. But I feel so much better now. I focus better on the job. My marks have gone up. My boyfriend says I smell better and he kisses me more often now. I DID IT!
Robert's Story
I quit the stick! Hi, my name is Robert, I am 16 years old and I have been smoking steady for 1-½ years but have been smoking for 3 years really. I go to Notre Dame Catholic High School.
I have recently quit the stick. And this is why I did. On Sunday, December 3, 2002 I was drinking and having a good safe time. I looked around the room and saw them all smoking and coughing, and I was too. I told myself "why"? Why am I doing this to me? I want to live and do things before I die. I realized if I were to keep smoking the way I did, I would probably die by 40 years of age. NO NOT good enough. I want to retire and see my kids get married and have their own kids.
So if you want to live, quit the stick just like I did.
Byron's Story
I am quitting. Hi, my name is Byron. I am 17 years old; I go to Notre Dame High School. The reason why I am quitting smoking is because of my grandfather is dying of cancer. It is incurable cancer and I don't want to be like him. So that is why I am quitting.
