Girls
Inc (formerly known as Big Sisters) was also successful in securing funding from the
Tri-Health tobacco prevention monies. Here is how they used their funding.

Girls
Inc., (formerly Big Sisters) has done a lot for me. I always look forward to the
next programs because I know that I'll have fun. This program, which was sponsored
by the Health Unit, was called Friendly PEERsuasion. We learned about misleading,
drug abuse, and smoking. It was also a stress relieving class. We had an artist come
in and man, do I ever notice the difference in my drawings. Now I can draw things
that I wanted to draw before but couldn't. I learned to draw a bird, cat and
dolphin. When we were learning about misleading, we found out the amazing secrets of
advertising. Like... you see a hamburger on a billboard and man, it looks big and
juicy. You know, the way they do that is by putting toothpicks in between
everything. And the way they make people look so thin is by stretching the picture.
And when we learned about drug abuse and smoking, they told us that when you see an
advertisement for cigarettes or alcohol the people in the picture seem happy, but
really they aren't. They get paid to smile and pretend to be having a good time. And
sometimes for cigarette commercials they find people who've never smoked in they're
life and pay them a lot of money to be in them. One night we split into three groups
and made posters about drugs, smoking and alcohol and talked about what's bad about
smoking, drinking and doing drugs. Smoking is a horrible habit and I'm glad that
there are things to help people quit. Lung cancer is a very bad affect of smoking.
The best things about Girls Inc. this session were:
* the artist
* the dog trainer
