Kemptville Youth Centre was successful in securing funding from the Tri-Health tobacco prevention monies. Here is how they are currently using that funding.

"Smoking Stinks!"

Launched Feb. 19th with a brown bag lunch, the "smoking stinks" campaign educates youth that smoking is NOT the norm. The Youth Centre, partnering with Tri Health, Leeds and Grenville Health Unit, is encouraging youth to make positive choices with respect to tobacco.

Heading into the schools with the 'smoking stinks' campaign information we received tremendous positive support including great feedback from the students. "Smoking is bad! It kills you! I don't understand why tobacco companies like to kill people," says one grade 6 student at Kemptville Public School. Students were given free locker and backpack fresheners, hand wipes and sticks of gum promoting 'smoking stinks'.

A "Smoke-Free Wall of Fame" has been unveiled as the kick-off to this campaign with pictures of youth and members of the community supporting this project showcased permanently on the front wall of the Youth Centre. Pictures, including local politicians, teachers, business owners and youth, are placed in a graduated showcase encouraging smokers to move to the smoke-free side. Pictures are placed under the headings "wanting to quit", "trying to quit", "smoke-free now", and "always smoke-free!"

In only one month we have seen six former smokers move from "wanting to quit" and "trying to quit" to "smoke-free now". Once their pictures are on the wall it serves as a constant reminder.

"Smoking Stinks" t-shirts have been made and are given to youth who are on the "smoke-free" wall of fame. Youth have been seen wearing these around their schools and others have come and asked to be a part of this.

As grade 10 students at North Grenville District High School say, "smoking doesn't just kill you, you're killing others too." We encourage members of the community to support this campaign by joining our "Wall of Fame" and promoting "Smoking Stinks".
